Should You Manage Google Ads Yourself or Hire an Agency?

Google makes it easy to start running ads. A few clicks, a credit card, and you are live. That is both the appeal and the trap. Getting started is easy; getting profitable results is where experience matters. So should you do it yourself or hire help? Here is a framework for deciding.

What DIY does well

Managing your own ads can make sense when:

  • Your budget is small and an agency fee would take a big share of it
  • You have time to learn and to check the account regularly
  • Your offer is simple, with a narrow set of keywords and one location
  • You are testing the water and want to learn how search ads work before committing

You will learn a lot, and you stay close to the numbers. Many owners start this way.

Where DIY often goes wrong

Common problems we see in self-managed accounts:

  • Broad keywords that match searches you never intended, such as free, jobs, or DIY
  • No negative keywords, so budget leaks to the wrong clicks
  • Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of a page built for that search
  • No call tracking, so phone leads are invisible
  • Automated settings left on defaults that spend freely
  • Rarely checking the account, then checking too often and changing too much
  • Judging by clicks instead of leads and customers

None of these are signs of laziness. They are what happens when a complicated system looks simple.

What an agency adds

A good agency brings experience from many accounts, tools, a structured testing process, and time. They should help with:

  • Campaign structure and keyword strategy
  • Conversion tracking, including calls
  • Ad copy and testing
  • Landing page recommendations
  • Budget control and reporting
  • Staying current with platform changes

You are paying for judgment and hours you would otherwise spend. The question is whether the improvement in results justifies the fee.

Signs it is time to get help

  • You are spending money and cannot say what it produced
  • Your cost per lead keeps rising
  • You get plenty of clicks but few leads, or many leads but few customers
  • You do not have time to manage the account
  • You want to scale spend but are afraid of wasting money
  • Your competitors seem to be everywhere on Google

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself:

  1. What is one new customer worth to me?
  2. How much am I spending on Google Ads per month?
  3. How much time do I spend on it, and what is that time worth?
  4. Do I know my cost per customer?

If you cannot answer the last question, tracking is the first thing to fix, whether you hire help or not. Our free ROAS Calculator helps you check whether your ads are paying off, including a break-even point and scaling scenarios.

A middle path

You do not have to choose all or nothing. Options include:

  • An audit. A one-time review of your account with a to-do list you implement yourself
  • Setup plus training. An expert builds the structure and tracking, then you manage day to day
  • Full management. The agency runs it and reports to you

A good provider will tell you which level fits.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and it is common. Give the agency access to your existing account so history is preserved, and share what you have learned.

It should stay in your name, with the agency given access. Ask this before you sign.

It varies by market. Ask what budget is realistic for your area and goals.
