Retargeting Ads: How to Win Back People Who Visited Your Website

Most people who visit a website leave without contacting the business. That does not mean they were not interested. They may have been busy, comparing options, or waiting for the right moment. Retargeting is how you stay in front of them after they leave.

What retargeting is

Retargeting, sometimes called remarketing, shows ads to people who have already interacted with your business, such as visiting your website, watching a video, or engaging with your page. You are not advertising to a cold audience. You are reminding someone who already showed interest.

It works across platforms. On Facebook and Instagram, you can show ads to website visitors. On Google, you can show ads on search results and across websites and apps. Privacy features and platform rules change how this works over time, so check what is currently supported and how your audiences are built.

Why it can be valuable

  • The audience is warmer. These people already know you.
  • Decisions take time. Many purchases, especially larger ones, are considered over days or weeks.
  • It is often efficient. The audiences are smaller, so retargeting campaigns can be affordable.
  • It supports other channels. Retargeting helps convert traffic you paid for through search ads, social ads, or SEO.

Who to retarget

Different visitors deserve different messages. Common groups:

  • All website visitors within a recent period
  • People who viewed a specific service or product page
  • People who started a form or added to cart but did not finish
  • People who watched a significant portion of a video
  • People who engaged with your social page
  • Past customers, for repeat business, reviews, and referrals

Exclude people who already converted unless you are promoting something new. Showing "Request a quote" to someone who just booked is wasteful and annoying.

What to say

Match the message to what they did:

  • Someone viewed your roofing page: "Still thinking about your roof? Request a free inspection."
  • Someone abandoned a cart: "Your cart is waiting. Free shipping on orders over a set amount."
  • Someone read about a service: Show reviews, a short video, or answers to common objections.
  • Past customers: "Time for your annual checkup? Book a visit."

Use a clear, friendly call to action. Add proof, such as reviews, photos, and guarantees, to address doubts that held them back.

How long and how often

Timing matters. For many local services, a window of a few weeks after the visit makes sense. For longer buying cycles, you may want a longer window. Avoid showing the same ad too often. Set a limit on frequency where the platform allows, and rotate your creative so people do not tire of it.

Keep it respectful

Retargeting can feel intrusive if done badly. Be mindful:

  • Do not follow people around forever
  • Do not use sensitive information in ads or targeting
  • Follow privacy laws and platform policies on tracking, consent, and disclosures
  • Make sure your website privacy policy describes your advertising and tracking practices

Set it up properly

You need tracking in place on your website, such as the Meta Pixel or other tags, so platforms can build audiences from visitors. Test that it works and that your cookie and consent settings are handled correctly. Without tracking, you cannot retarget.

You also need enough traffic. If very few people visit your site, audiences may be too small to run effectively, so build traffic first or combine it with other audience types.

Measure the results

Look at:

  • Cost per lead or sale from retargeting
  • How many conversions came after someone saw a retargeting ad
  • The effect on your overall results, not only the last click

Remember that retargeting often gets credit for people who might have returned anyway, so compare with a holdout or look at overall trends when you can. Our free ROAS Calculator helps check whether your ad spend is profitable.

Do not forget the basics

Retargeting cannot fix a weak website or an unanswered phone. If visitors leave because the site is confusing or slow, work on that too. See what better conversion is worth with our free Website Conversion Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

No. Retargeting audiences are small, so modest budgets can be enough.

It can feel that way if overdone. Use reasonable frequency, relevant messages, and honest privacy practices.

Platforms have rules about using customer lists and data. Follow them and applicable privacy laws.
