Your Shopify Store Gets Traffic but No Sales: 10 Things to Check

Visitors without sales is one of the most common e-commerce problems, and it is rarely one single thing. It is usually a handful of small frictions that add up. Work through this list in order, checking each against your own store.

1. Is the traffic the right traffic?

Not all visitors are buyers. If your ads or posts attract people who are curious but not shopping, sales will be low no matter how good the store is. Look at where visitors come from and compare conversion by source. Traffic from search and email often converts differently from social browsing. If most traffic is poor quality, fix targeting before the store.

2. Does the homepage make the offer clear?

Within seconds a new visitor should know what you sell, who it is for, and why to buy from you. Check that your homepage has a clear headline, strong images, and easy paths to your best products.

3. Are your product pages persuasive?

Product pages do the selling. Check for:

  • High-quality photos from multiple angles, plus lifestyle images or video
  • A clear title and benefit-focused description
  • Size, fit, materials, and specifications
  • Honest answers to common questions
  • Reviews and ratings

If a shopper has to guess, they will leave.

4. Is the price and shipping clear?

Surprise costs at checkout are a leading cause of abandoned carts. Show shipping costs and delivery times early. If you offer free shipping over a threshold, display it. Make sure your pricing feels fair relative to competitors and the value you describe.

5. Do you have trust signals?

New customers need reassurance:

  • Customer reviews with real details
  • Clear return and refund policies
  • Secure checkout badges and recognizable payment options
  • Contact information and an About page that shows who is behind the brand

6. Is the store fast and mobile-friendly?

Most shoppers browse on phones. Test your store on mobile. Pages should load quickly, images should not be oversized, and buttons should be easy to tap. A slow store loses visitors before they see a product.

7. Is the checkout easy?

Each extra step, field, or surprise loses buyers. Check:

  • Guest checkout available
  • Few form fields
  • Multiple payment options
  • Clear error messages
  • Order summary visible throughout

Place a test order yourself on a phone and note every moment of friction.

8. Are you following up with people who left?

Most visitors do not buy on the first visit. Abandoned cart emails and retargeting ads can bring some of them back. Make sure these are set up and test them.

9. Is your tracking accurate?

Sometimes the problem is measurement. Confirm your analytics and ad pixels are installed correctly and that purchases are recorded. Compare platform numbers with your Shopify orders. If the data is wrong, you may be making decisions on bad information.

10. Is the product-market fit there?

Sometimes the honest answer is that the product, price, or positioning needs work. Check customer feedback, compare to competitors, and talk to buyers. A better offer can matter more than any design change.

How to prioritize

Start with what affects the most shoppers: traffic quality, product pages, shipping clarity, mobile speed, and checkout. Then add trust and follow-up. Change one thing at a time when you can, so you know what helped.

Check your ad math too

If you are paying for traffic, make sure the numbers work. Our free ROAS Calculator has an e-commerce mode that compares revenue to ad spend using your margin, so you can see whether your campaigns are profitable.

Frequently asked questions

It varies by product, price, and traffic source. Focus on improving your own rate over time and comparing like with like.

Not necessarily. Improving the pages and offers you already have often matters more.

Enough to see patterns. Very small numbers are noisy, so look at trends.
