Video Ads for Local Businesses: What to Film With Just a Phone

You do not need a film crew to make a video ad that works. For many local businesses, a phone, decent light, and a clear idea are enough. People respond to real, specific footage of real work and real people. Here is what to film, how to film it, and how to turn clips into ads.

Why video works for local businesses

  • It shows, not tells. People see the result, the process, or the people they would be working with.
  • It builds trust. Faces and real work feel more genuine than stock photos.
  • It stops the scroll, especially on Facebook and Instagram, where video takes up much of the feed.
  • It is flexible. One shoot can produce several short clips.

Quality matters less than clarity and authenticity, though poor sound and shaky footage can hurt.

Easy video ideas

Before and after. A transformation is one of the best ad concepts: a cleaned patio, a repaired roof, a styled haircut, a detailed car.

A day on the job. Show a quick walk-through of what happens during a service call or project.

Meet the team. A short introduction from the owner or a technician, with a clear message about what you do and who you serve.

Customer stories. A short testimonial from a happy customer, with permission, speaking in their own words.

Tips and how-tos. "Three signs your water heater is failing" or "How to prepare your home for storm season." Helpful content builds credibility.

Behind the scenes. The kitchen in motion, a craftsperson at work, a product being made.

Offers and events. A short announcement of a special, a new menu, or a community event.

Answering common questions. Film yourself answering the questions customers ask most.

How to film with a phone

  • Shoot vertically for Stories and Reels, since most people hold their phones upright. Check the formats you plan to use.
  • Use natural light. Face a window, or shoot outdoors in soft light. Avoid harsh backlighting.
  • Keep it steady. Hold the phone with two hands, brace it, or use a small tripod or gimbal.
  • Get close. Fill the frame with the subject, and clean your lens.
  • Mind the sound. Poor audio is more distracting than a modest picture. Film in a quiet place or use a simple clip-on microphone.
  • Capture extra footage. Short clips, a few seconds each, give you material to edit.
  • Check the background. Remove clutter and anything you do not want shown.

Structure a short ad

Most effective short videos follow a pattern:

  1. Hook (first 2 to 3 seconds). Show the most interesting thing right away: the finished result, a surprising moment, or a clear question.
  2. Middle. Show the process or the benefit, with quick cuts.
  3. Call to action. Say what to do: call, book, order, or visit.

Aim for roughly 15 to 30 seconds for many ads, shorter if you can. Check the current recommendations for each placement.

Add captions

Many people watch without sound. Add captions or on-screen text that tell the story on their own. Most phone editing apps can generate them or let you add text easily.

Simple editing

You do not need complicated software. A basic phone editing app lets you trim clips, add captions, add music where you have the rights, and export in the right format. Keep branding light: a logo at the end, and your phone number or website.

Be careful with music and permissions

  • Use music you have the rights to use in ads. Some platform libraries are not licensed for commercial use
  • Get permission from anyone featured, including customers and staff
  • Do not show private information or customer addresses
  • Follow platform advertising policies

Put it to work

Once you have a few clips, turn them into ads: a short video for Facebook and Instagram Reels and Stories, a slightly longer version for the feed, and a clip for your website. Target nearby people and test two or three versions. See our social media advertising service.

Frequently asked questions

Often short works best. Test lengths, and put the key message early.

Not necessarily. Footage of the work or product can be effective. But a friendly face helps build trust.

Refresh regularly to avoid ad fatigue, even if only a few new clips each month.
