Call Tracking for Google Ads: How to See Which Ads Make the Phone Ring

For many local businesses, the phone is the main way customers reach out. But if you cannot tell which ads and keywords produce those calls, you are optimizing blind. You may be paying for clicks that never call while cutting the keywords that do. Call tracking fixes that.

Why call tracking matters

Without it, a call is just a call. With it, you can see:

  • Which campaign, ad, and keyword produced the call
  • How long the call lasted
  • Whether it was answered or missed
  • Whether it became a booked job
  • What you actually pay per call and per customer

That is the difference between "we got 40 clicks" and "we got 6 calls and 3 jobs from this keyword."

The main ways to track calls from Google Ads

Call extensions and call ads. These show your phone number in your ad. Google can track calls made from the ad itself using a Google forwarding number. This covers calls made directly from the ad, but not calls made after visiting your site.

Website call conversions. A tracking number on your website can show a different number to visitors who came from ads, so calls from the site can be tied back to the ad source. This is often done with a code snippet from Google or a third-party service.

Third-party call tracking tools. These services provide tracking numbers, call recordings (where permitted), call scoring, and reporting. They can track calls by source across several channels, not just Google.

Form and chat tracking. Calls are not the only conversions. Track form submissions and chat messages too.

Each approach has trade-offs in cost, detail, and setup. A good provider will recommend what suits your business.

What to set up

  1. Decide what counts as a conversion. For example, calls over a certain length, since very short calls may be wrong numbers.
  2. Install tracking numbers or snippets on your website and in your ads.
  3. Connect call data to Google Ads so it can show which keywords and ads produced calls.
  4. Test it. Call from different devices and confirm it records properly.
  5. Make sure the number shown is consistent and local. Tracking numbers should still look trustworthy, and keep your main business number listed in your Business Profile and online directories.

Recording, privacy, and rules

If you record calls, check the laws and rules for your state and for the callers' states about consent and disclosure, and tell callers in a clear message. Handle recordings and caller information responsibly. Ask providers how data is stored and who can access it.

How to use the data

Find what works. Look at which keywords and ads produce calls, then put more budget there.

Cut what does not. Pause or refine keywords that get clicks but no calls.

Judge by customers, not just calls. Add a step to mark which calls became booked jobs. Then you can see the cost per customer, not only cost per call.

Improve your phone response. Look at missed and after-hours calls, and call duration. If calls from ads are going unanswered, fix that before raising your budget. Our free Missed Call Revenue Calculator shows what that costs.

Train your team. Listen to sample calls, where permitted, to learn how to improve scripts and handle objections.

Connect call data to profitability

Once you know cost per customer, check it against what a customer is worth. Our free ROAS Calculator has a lead generation mode that factors in your close rate and customer value to show whether your ad spend is paying off.

Common mistakes

  • Relying only on call extensions and missing calls from the website
  • Counting very short calls as leads
  • Not testing tracking numbers
  • Ignoring missed calls
  • Changing tracking setups without noting the date, which makes comparisons hard

Frequently asked questions

Keep your main number consistent in your Business Profile and directories, and use tracking numbers carefully on your website. Ask your provider how they set this up.

They are useful for training and quality, but follow consent and disclosure rules.

Track those too. Call tracking is one part of a complete picture.
