Before you decide that Google Ads does not work for your business, run through this checklist. Many accounts that seem broken have one or two fixable problems. Others do reveal that the economics do not work, and that is worth knowing too.
1. Can you measure results?
If you cannot say how many calls, forms, and sales came from your ads, you cannot judge them. Check that conversion tracking is set up for phone calls and form submissions, and that it fires correctly. If tracking is missing, fix it first.
2. Are your keywords focused on buyers?
Look at the search terms report. If you see searches like "jobs," "free," "how to fix it yourself," or terms unrelated to what you sell, your keywords are too broad. Add negative keywords and focus on terms that show buying intent, such as service plus location.
3. Are you showing ads in the right places?
Check your location settings. Make sure you target people in your service area, and consider whether the setting includes people merely "interested in" a location. Review which areas produce clicks and leads, and exclude areas you do not serve.
4. Are your ads clear and relevant?
Your ad should match what people search for and say what makes you different: speed, licensing, guarantees, pricing information, or a clear offer. Test several headlines. Check that your ad extensions, such as call buttons and location, are in place.
5. Do your landing pages match?
Send people to pages that continue the conversation from the ad. A search for "water heater replacement" should land on a page about that, with a clear call to action. Generic pages lose visitors. See our tips on web design and development for conversion-focused pages.
6. Is your website fast and mobile-friendly?
Most local searches are on phones. Test your pages on your own device. A page that loads slowly or hides the phone number will waste clicks. Our free Website Conversion Calculator shows what improving conversion is worth.
7. Is your phone answered?
A well-performing campaign can still fail if calls go unanswered. Check call logs for missed and after-hours calls from ads. Align ad schedules with your availability, or use an AI voice assistant to cover gaps.
8. Is your budget realistic for your market?
If clicks cost more than your economics allow, or your budget is so small that the account never gathers data, results will disappoint. Work backward from your customer value and target cost per customer. Our free ROAS Calculator helps you check profitability.
9. Have you given it enough time and data?
Changing settings daily prevents learning. On the other hand, letting an obviously wasteful campaign run for months is expensive. Set a review rhythm, such as weekly checks and monthly changes, and fix clear errors immediately.
10. Are automated settings doing what you want?
Google offers many automated features, such as broad match and automated bidding, and some campaign types that give you less control. They can work well with good data and clear goals, but can waste money when set loosely. Review settings and understand what each one does.
How to read the results of this checklist
- Mostly "no" on 1 to 3: your setup needs structural fixes.
- Mostly "no" on 4 to 7: the click is working but the experience after it is not.
- Mostly "yes," but still not profitable: your market or economics may be the issue, and you may need a different mix of channels or a different offer.
When it may truly not be worth it
Sometimes Google Ads is not a good fit: the keywords are too expensive for your margins, the customer value is too low, or your sales cycle does not suit search. It is better to learn that quickly and redirect the budget than to keep spending out of hope.
