Why Your Google Ads Get Clicks but No Calls (and How to Fix It)

Few things are more frustrating than watching your Google Ads budget disappear while the phone stays quiet. The good news is that "clicks but no calls" usually has a small number of causes, and you can check them in a sensible order.

First, make sure you can actually see calls

Before assuming the ads are failing, confirm that you are measuring correctly. Many accounts have leads they cannot see because:

  • Calls from ads go to your main number with no call tracking
  • Form submissions are not set up as conversions
  • Tracking is installed incorrectly or only on some pages
  • Customers click, then call later from a different device

If you cannot tell which calls came from ads, set up call tracking and conversion tracking first. Otherwise every other fix is guesswork.

Cause 1: the wrong people are clicking

If your keywords are too broad, you may be paying for clicks from people who will never become customers. Search terms can include jobs, DIY, free, parts, and unrelated services.

Check: Look at the search terms report. Which actual searches triggered your ads? Fix: Add negative keywords, tighten match types, and focus on terms that show buying intent.

Cause 2: the ad promises one thing and the page delivers another

If your ad says "Same-day AC repair" but the click lands on a generic home page, people bounce.

Check: Does each ad group send people to a page that matches the search and the ad? Fix: Build specific landing pages, or at least send traffic to the most relevant service page.

Cause 3: the page is slow or hard to use on a phone

Most local searches happen on mobile. A page that loads slowly, has tiny text, or hides the phone number will lose visitors fast.

Check: Open your page on your own phone over cellular data. Can you find the phone number and tap to call in a few seconds? Fix: Compress images, remove clutter, add a tap-to-call button, and keep the main action above the fold.

Cause 4: the page does not build trust

Visitors want to know you are real, reliable, and local. Missing reviews, photos, licenses, and clear service areas make people hesitate.

Check: Would a stranger feel confident calling you after 10 seconds on the page? Fix: Add reviews, project photos, credentials, and clear contact information.

Cause 5: the ad is shown at the wrong times or places

If your ads run when no one can answer, or in areas you do not serve, you get clicks you cannot use.

Check: Review ad schedule and location settings. Look at which areas produce clicks. Fix: Align ad hours with your phone coverage and exclude areas you do not serve.

Cause 6: calls come in but are missed

If people call and no one answers, your ads may be working while your phone is failing.

Check: Review call logs for missed and after-hours calls from ad sources. Fix: Answer faster, cover peak hours, and consider an AI voice assistant to catch the rest. You can estimate the cost with our free Missed Call Revenue Calculator.

Cause 7: the offer is not compelling

In crowded markets, people compare several providers. A vague ad blends in.

Check: Does your ad say something specific, such as service speed, guarantees, licensing, or a clear offer? Fix: Test different headlines and benefits, and make the call to action clear.

Cause 8: the budget and bids are too low to compete

Sometimes your ad rarely appears in a good position, or the account has no room to learn.

Check: Look at impression share and average position. Are you losing most auctions? Fix: Focus the budget on fewer, higher-value keywords or raise the budget if the numbers support it.

A simple diagnostic order

  1. Is tracking working?
  2. Are the search terms relevant?
  3. Do ads and landing pages match?
  4. Is the page fast and clear on a phone?
  5. Is the phone being answered?
  6. Is the offer strong?
